NEEDLE SETS RECORD FOR AN INDEPENDENT FILM IN FIRST WEEKEND OF RELEASE
August 5, 2011 - Santa Monica, CA
Lightning Entertainment, the Santa Monica-based sales, production and distribution company, announced today that it its film NEEDLE has hit a box office high in Turkey in its first weekend of release. The film debuted on 62 screens in the country, and scored a per screen average of 1567 Turkish Lira -- setting a record for a foreign, independent (non studio) film that has been sub-titled into Turkish. Needle was also the 4th highest grossing film in Turkey overall for the 3-day weekend, with a total box office gross of 92,172 TL. NEEDLE’s per screen gross even beat out the average for the #1 film of the weekend, HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART II.
Audiences are clearly responding to the film’s chilling story and terrifying effects, with many audience members remarking that it “as scary as INSIDIOUS.” NEEDLE tells the story of Ben (Michael Dorman), a young college student who inherits a small antique machine known as "La Vaudou Mort." He shows the mysterious machine off to a group of his close friends, but he returns to his dorm room one day to find that the machine has gone missing. The next day his estranged older brother Marcus (Travis Fimmel), a forensic photographer, turns up with some terrible news - Ben's best friend, Ryan (Nathaniel Buzolic), has been gruesomely killed, ripped apart from the inside by some unexplainable force. Soon Ben learns that the machine was created as a tool for revenge, supposedly harnessing the supernatural powers of voodoo. And it’s not long before more of Ben’s friends start being dispatched one-by-one by an unseen and vengeful killer....
Needle is directed by John V. Soto and produced by Deidre Kitcher.
